Learning - The More You Know
Learning about coins and currency can be a lot of fun. It can also be overwhelming. Think about United States half dollars for a moment. There are Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust, Seated Liberty, Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin, and Kennedy half dollars. That's a lot to absorb!
Equally important is understanding how to care for your collectible coins and currency; holding, handling and storing. NEVER EVER clean, rub, or shine your coins in an attempt to make them look more appealing. This will severely decrease the value of your coins!

Local Or Regional Coin ClubsVisiting or joining a local coin club can provide one with a wealth of information about coin collecting. In most clubs, like the Tyler Coin Club, there are usually a few members that will take a newcomer under their wing to make them feel comfortable and show them the ropes.

State Coin Clubs
Most state level coins clubs do not have meetings per se. Regional coin clubs affiliate with the state level association. That seems to be the case with the Texas Numismatic Association. However, there are still great benefits and access to volumes of educational information when joining a state level organization.
Coin Shows
|
The American Numismatic Association is the national level organization for the United States. One can get quite a bit of information just by visiting their website. However, joining the ANA gives members access to an almost unlimited cache of educational information.

Coin shows are an interesting avenue to gain additional collecting experience. The larger state and national shows will have educational sessions available to attendees. Even medium size shows will have educational and other programs specifically focused on young numismatists. Most shows are hosted by local coin clubs. Seeking out a club member for a quick orientation would be a good investment of your time.
